Here's the procedure for applying for a coding position here on Coastal Legends.

Before an application will be given serious consideration, a potential applicant must meet all of the following conditions. Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the admins' discretion.

Please note: Our players demand (and have the right to expect) a trustworthy and competent coding staff. This application process has been designed with this in mind.

• Written Communication Skills
  All coders will be required to write areas for adventuring campaigns before being allowed to move on to other types of projects. A major part of writing areas is coming up with descriptions for rooms, monsters, and equipment. This means you must be able to write in fluent English without sloppy grammar and with a minimum of spelling errors. Your emailed application (described below) will be carefully reviewed to ensure this requirement is met.

  If building areas isn't your cup of tea, please don't apply.

• Attitude and Maturity
  People who have a history of demonstrating a negative attitude or behavior disruptive to the game will not be considered. This is because, even if all other requirements are met, coders are part of a team. The coding staff must be able to work together. Someone who is disruptive or negative as a player will most likely be the same way (or more so) as a coder, which negatively impacts the entire coding staff.

  Coders are entrusted with a certain amount of power. A person who demonstrates little self-control as a player will not be entrusted with this power as a coder. Keep this in mind when considering whether or not to exploit a bug or coding loophole.

  Sorry, but persons under the age of 16 will have a hard time getting their application accepted. Exceptions to this guideline may be granted in extreme circumstances.

• No Strangers
  It isn't possible to measure the above "attitude and maturity" requirement by talking to somebody only one time. Some people have great "interviewing skills"... and then turn out to be deceitful or unreliable. To avoid this, Coastal Legends does not "insta-wiz" people.

  If you're the kind of person who hops from MUD to MUD to see who will "insta-wiz" you, please look elsewhere. Otherwise you are wasting my time and yours. THANK YOU!

  During pre-Opening, applications will be considered from people known to us. These will either be Core 265* players/coders in good standing, or people who have assisted in testing Coastal Legends.

  Once the MUD is officially open (post-Opening), applications will be considered from Coastal Legends players who have reached level 15 or above.

• Not associated with banished individuals from Spokane, WA.
  If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then don't worry: you've met this requirement. :)

If you've met the above requirements and wish to apply, here's how to do so:

• Read the coder rules
  Please first read the Coder Rules, located elsewhere on this website. It describes Grey's philosophy regarding the Coder position, and what you're allowed to get away with :)
• Think about 2-3 areas you'd like to build
  Come up with a rough outline on what you'd like to work on if you were promoted to a coding position. These need to be area building projects.
• Contact the admins, applying for a coding position
  Use the MUD's "mail" command to send Isaiah or Erwos an application. If you have an account on our web-based board you can also send your coder app from there. Click messages ,new message. In the 'to username' field put 'grey' 'isaiah' 'erwos' seperated by a space. (Note that the web board has message length limits so the full application should be submitted by a different means). Please include the following information:
  1. Your REAL name
  2. Your Internet email address (only necessary if you "faked" your address during the character creation process)
  3. Your age, or age range (eg: under 16, 16-18, 18-22, etc...)
  4. Your estimated time commitment: are you available for the summer only, during the school year only, 1-2 days a month only, etc. If you have a limited amount of time available, please make this known up front.
  5. A few paragraphs describing the 2-3 area coding projects you've been thinking about.

  Please remember that your written communication skills will be reviewed, so don't write your application using an "AOL chatroom" writing style.

All coder applications and promotions are reviewed by the mud staff. Once your application has been reviewed, an interview may be scheduled, or code samples may be requested. The opinions of other members of the coding staff may also be taken into consideration.

Prior coding experience is NOT required, although it is helpful. Experience using any programming language is helpful. If you have this experience, please mention it in your application.
