Coastal Legends player commands
| Advance | The game displays a message as soon as you've met the requirements to advance. You may use this command anywhere in the world, provided you're not in combat. The other restriction is you can't be under the effect of a stat-enhancing spell (such as "Strength" or "Endurance") |
| Alias | You can make up your own shorthand versions of commands by setting up aliases for them. Type "alias" all by itself to see what aliases the game has already made for you. Aliases can be simple, such as typing "alias sc score" will let you type "sc" instead of "score". One I've setup for myself is "alias clw pray cure light wounds on $1" which lets me "clw {player}" whenever I want to heal someone. |
| Ansi | Type "ansi on" if your terminal supports colors. After you've done that, type "ansi" all by itself to customize your colors. |
| Autoclosein | Mages and weaker members who wish to remain in the party's rear ranks will want to type "autoclosein off". Fighters, barbarians, monks, and stonger clerics might wish to type "autoclosein on". This turns on or off the automatic "closein" feature during combat, which causes your character to automatically "closein" to your current target during your initative turn in the combat round. See the description of the "closein" command for more information. |
| Bug | Type "bug" all by itself to report a programming error in the game. This will put you into an editor where you may type as many lines as needed to explain what happened. |
| Cast | This is how a Mage casts spells. Clerics use the "pray" command. The command syntax is: "cast {spellname} at|on {target}". There are 2 built-in aliases for {target}: You can type "me" to refer to yourself, or "enemy" to refer to your current combat target. This is especially useful if you're creating combat aliases. For example: "alias mm cast magic missile at enemy". Certain spells will initiate combat. There is a percentage of spellcasting failure if armour stronger than a Robe is worn, or a shield. The percentage increases with the Armour Class. |
| Chat | This command is only available if there's a "blue glowing orb" in the room with you. Type "chat" all by itself to tune in or tune out this channel. Type "chat {message}" to send a message to everybody tuned in. Type "chat :{emotion}" to send an emote (such as "chat :smiles" will display "Grey smiles"). The chat channel is an "in-character" channel. |
| Close | To close an open door, type "close {direction} door". To close an open container, such as a chest, type "close {container}". |
| Closein | Type "closein {person}" to step 5 feet closer to the named creature or person. This is important for combat, or for casting spells that have a limited range. |
| Combatspam | Miscellaneous non-critical combat messages (combat spam) are turned on by default. You can turn them off by typing "combatspam off". |
| Consider | Type "consider {person}" to gauge how tough a potential enemy might be. |
| Describe | To set the description other players see when looking at you, type "describe {your desired description}". You can insert carriage returns (line breaks) by typing "<CR>". |
| Disarm | This requires the Disable Device skill. To disarm a trapped item, type "disarm {item}". Attempting to disarm a trap without carrying Thieves' Tools incurs a penalty. Failure to disarm the trap by a slim margin (missing the roll by 4 points or less) will not result in anything harmful, and the attempt may be repeated. A large failure (missing the roll by 5 points or more) will spring the trap. Traps can be detected with the "search {item}" command. |
| Dodge | This requires the Dodge feat. Type "dodge {person}" to gain a +1 Armour Class bonus against a specific enemy. This bonus remains in effect until that creature is killed, combat ends, or you perform a special combat action (such as using another feat or casting a spell). |
| Drop | Type "drop {name of item}" to move a carried item from your inventory to the room's floor. Type "drop 100 coins" to drop 100 of your money to the floor. |
| Type "email" all by itself to display your current Internet email settings. This shows your email address and whether or not you've allowed other players to see your address. Type "email {your address}" to change it. After you've changed it, you'll be asked if you wish the your address to be private or public. | |
| Emote | This command doesn't serve any practical purpose; it's really just for role-playing. Type "emote laughs really REALLY hard" and others in the room will see "*Grey laughs really REALLY hard". An asterisk is placed in front of your name to prevent certain forms of cheating. |
| Equip | This is how you "use" weapons and armour. Type "equip all" to wear all your armour and wield your weapon. You can "equip {item}" to equip a specific item. Remember to use the "equip all" command every time you login. The only items which auto-equip themselves are cursed items. |
| Feats | Feats are special abilities your character acquires as you advance in the game. Type "feats" all by itself to see what feats you have. This will also tell you if you may acquire additional feats for your character. Type "feats list" to see what feats are possible. Type "feats add {featname}" to acquire a feat. |
| Findemote | There are many built-in emotes. Type "findemote {action}" to get a list of built-in emotes which contain the specified action. For example, try typing "findemote smile". |
| Finger | Type "finger" all by itself to see who's playing. Type "finger {player}" to view information about a specific player. The player finger display will show the last time the named person logged on, their level, and their email address if they set it as "public". |
| Follow | This command helps an adventuring party stay together. The leader can type "follow allow {person}". Each named person may then type "follow {leader}". Type "follow stop" to stop following. Following is automatically suspended during combat. |
| Get | Use this command to pick up an item. You can "get {item}" if its on the floor. Use "get {item} from {container}" to grab something out of a chest, bag or corpse. |
| Give | This is how you may transfer money or an item to another person. Type "give {item} to {person}" to hand them a piece of equipment, or "give 100 coins to {person}" to give them 100 of your money. |
| Help | Type "help" all by itself to view a list of the available help topics. Type "help {topic}" for more information about a topic or command. As Coastal Legends matures, more topics and commands will be documented and added to the help system. |
| History | This displays a list of your most recently typed commands. |
| Info | This is a shorthand version of Score. Type "info" all by itself to see your Hit Points, money, experience, and carrying capacity all on a single line. You can customize the display by typing "info {topic} {topic} {topic}...". Valid arguments to "info" are: "hp", "exp", "money" and "carry". For example, if you're only interested in seeing your Hit Points, you could create an alias: "alias hp info hp". Typing "hp" will then display your Hit Points only. |
| Inventory | Displays your carried items. You have a built-in alias "i" for this. |
| Journal | Certain rooms or events will add entries to your Journal, which is a kind of personal diary. Type "journal" all by itself for a list of chapters in your journal. Type "journal {chapter #}" to see the detailed entries in the specified chapter number. |
| Kill | Initiate combat by typing "kill {person}". You can also type "kill {closest}" to kill the closest creature (this variation of the "kill" command will not target other players). In certain circumstances, it may not be possible to fight anyone. In other circumstances, it will only be possible to fight non-players (meaning: monsters only). |
| Languages | This lists the languages you know how to speak. By default, all characters understand the "Common" language. Depending upon your race, you may know another language as well. Additional languages may be learned by typing "language add {language name}". Typing "languages" all by itself lists what's possible to learn. |
| Lastreset | Type "lastreset" to see when your room was last reset by the game. Certain events happen when a room resets. For example, a monster might reappear or a disabled trap might be re-enabled. The timing of room resets can be modified by the game administrator, but it typically varies between 15-30 minutes. |
| Listemote | This displays the list of all built-in emotes (player emotion commands). |
| Look | Type "look" all by itself to display the room's description. Type "look at {item}" to see the description of an item or person. |
| Type "mail" all by itself to display a list of mail messages you have. Mail is considered an Out-Of-Character means of communication. People may send mail to you even when you're not logged in. Type "mail {player}" to enter the mail editor and send a message to a specific player. | |
| News | Type "news" to re-display the news normally shown when you login. |
| Nickname | You can define shorter names for players with this command. Type "help nickname" for more information. |
| Open | To open a closed door, type "open {direction} door". To open a closed container, such as a chest, type "open {container}". Note: opening a trapped object will spring the trap unless the trap has been disarmed. |
| Party | Use the "party" command to access the Player Adventuring Company (party) command menu. Type "party help" for more information about what a Party is. |
| Passwd | This allows you to change your login password. Use this command whenever you feel the security of your password has been compromised. Type "passwd" all by itself to begin the password changing process. |
| Powerattack | This requires the Powerattack feat. Type "powerattack 3" to sacrifice 3 points on your next to-hit roll. The 3 points will be added to your to-damage roll if your to-hit roll is successful. You may specify any number, up to your base Attack Bonus (this is listed in your Score). |
| Pray | This is how a Cleric casts spells. The command syntax is: "pray {spellname} at|on {target}". It works exactly like the Mage "cast" command, except there is no change of spell failure due to worn armour. |
| Prepare | Before a Mage or Cleric may cast/pray spells, the spell in question must first be Prepared. You can only prepare known spells (you can't prepare a spell you haven't learned yet). The command syntax is: "prepare {spell}". |
| Put | This causes an object to be placed inside the inventory of a container, such as a bag or chest. The command syntax is: "put {object} in {container}". |
| Quaff | This is how you drink a potion, identified or not. If the potion has not been identified, you "quaff {color} potion". If the potion has been identified, you "quaff {name of potion}". Not all unidentified potions are beneficial to quaff. |
| Quit | This saves your character and exits the game. All "autoloading" inventory is also saved with your character, while non-autoloading inventory is dropped to the floor. Your character is physically removed from the world while you're offline. When you next login, your character will appear at the last "login point" you encountered. |
| Say | You can communicate with players and monsters in the same room by using the "say {message}" command. |
| Score | Use "Score" to list your vital statistics, money, experience points, hit points, and saving throws all on one screen. |
| Search | Hidden or secret exits can be found by typing "search". It may take multiple attempts before the hidden exist is revealed. Elves automatically search for hidden exits whenever they enter a room. Once a secret door has been found, you don't need to search again for it in the future (even if you logoff). To search for a trap on an item, such as a chest, type "search {item}". |
| Semote | The "semote {emote}" command shows you what you and others will see when you use one of the build-in player emotion commands. Try experimenting by typing "semote smile". |
| Set | The "set" command allows you to change some of your screen settings. You can change the line-wrapping column, the number of lines displayed per "more" screen, and your prompt. For example: "set wrap 100" if you have a wide screen. "set height 30" if you have a tall screen. The prompt settings will be documented at a later time. |
| Setsound | This command is useful if you're using the Zmud MUD client, or any other MUD client that's compatible with the MSP (MUD Sound Protocol). This command tells the MUD that you're using an MSP-compatible client, and sends a signal to your client to download and play a test sound. Users of the Portal MUD client do not need to use this command -- Portal is detected and sound-enabled automatically. |
| Showroom | This command displays the shape of the room you're in, your position within the room, where your fellow party members are located, where your current target is, the location of other creatures who are targeting you, and so on. The "sr" alias has been pre-defined for you. Note: those who use the "WinCore" MUD client see a graphical version of showroom/sr automatically. |
| Skills | This works exactly like the "feats" command, except it works with your Skills rather than your Feats. You can see which skills you have, which skills are available, and you can add skill points. If a skill is listed as "(cc)", meaning "cross-class", then when you spend a skill training point you'll only receive 1/2 a skill rank rather than a full skill rank. |
| Spells | Clerics and Mages use this command to list which spells they have learned, which spells they have prepared, and how many unspent SP (Spell Preparation) points they have remaining per spell level. Type "spells" to get an overview of how the command works. |
| Stats | Use "stats" to list your vital statistics: strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom and charisma. If any items or spells are causing stat bonuses/penalties to be in effect, the adjustment and net total is also listed. |
| Stopmusic | For MUD clients capable of playing MIDI music. This stops a currently-playing MIDI. |
| Suicide | This will permanently delete your character. For your protection, this command will prompt you to enter your character's password as confirmation. Level 1 characters who are "just visiting" to check out the MUD are encouraged to "suicide" if they don't intend on coming back. This frees up a good character name so somebody else may use it in the future. |
| Time | Type "time" to display both real-time and game-time. Real-time is displayed according to the local timezone at the Coastal Legends server (US Central). Game-time is displayed according to the fictional game clock. One game "minute" is 20 seconds. One game "day" is 4 real-time hours. There are 10 days per week, 3 weeks per month, and 12 months per year. One game "year" is 60 real-time days. |
| Turn | Clerics of good or neutral alignment may attempt to "turn undead". If the attempt is successful, affected undead creatures will either flee in terror or be immediately destroyed in holy flames. If the attempt doesn't succeed, additional attempts on the same creature will be ignored. Chances of success increase with the cleric's level. |
| Typo | Coders sometimes make spelling mistakes when writing rooms/monsters/items, so please do a good deed by using this command whenever you encounter a spelling error. Simply use "typo {message}". The message you specify will be logged along with your name, time, and filename of the room you're standing in. Please be specific in your report by listing the spelling error and the correct spelling. Thank you for making Coastal Legends a better place! |
| Unequip | This is the exact opposite of the "equip" command. You can "unequip all" or "unequip {item}". Cursed items cannot be unequipped -- in this case you need someone to cast a "Remove Curse" spell on you. This spell won't destroy the curse, but it will unequip the item for you. |
| Uptime | This displays how long the MUD has been running since the last game reboot. |
| Visible | If an Invisibility spell is currently in effect, use this command to become visibile again. |
| Who | Type "who" to display a list of players currently logged in. This doesn't display as much information as "finger" does. "Who" only shows player names and titles. |
| Wimpy | The "wimpy" command is your friend; use it! The command syntax is: "wimpy {# of hit points}". For example, if you type "wimpy 3", when your Hit Points reach 3 or lower, your character will automatically attempt to flee combat during your next initiative round. This command may save your life during times of 'Netlag. |
| N, S, E, W, Nw, NE, etc.. | Your basic movement commands of North, South, East, West, Northeast, etc., have pre-defined aliases for them. Users of Zmud, Portal, and WinCore can use their numeric keypads for these commands. |
| Xn, Xs, Xe, Xw, Xnw, Xne... | Put an "x" in front of a standard movement alias to "sidestep" in that direction. This means to move 5 feet in the desired direction within the room. This has the effect of changing your location on the "showroom" display. It is a handy command during combat if you wish to place yourself in a location having a better tactical advantage. |
